Carlsberg Malawi has announced that 1 085 teams have registered for the 2014 edition of the Copa Coca-Cola tournament.

The tournament will be launched on February 1 at Mponela, Dowa, according to Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager (non-alcoholic) Titha Mbilizi.

“We are proud to say that this year we have had an overwhelming number of schools registering to participate in the tournament. This year, we have jumped from 385 schools registered last year, to 1 085 schools,” said Mbilizi.

“Our aim with Copa Coca-Cola is to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle while at the same time developing football skills of young people in Malawi. An active lifestyle contributes to a healthy mind. We are, therefore, also keen to see young football players who are serious about the game as well as their education,” she said.

She said being a World Cup year, they hope this year’s tourney is focused on motivating the youth in schools to give their all so that in future they can participate at the world greatest sport event. Coca-Cola is the official sponsor of the Fifa World Cup

“This is the view of Carlsberg. That young people in Malawi can one day rub shoulders and play with world-class footballers. And that this dream can all start with a simple act, like registering to play in Copa Coca-Cola,” said Mbilizi.

She also announced that Carlsberg Malawi has increased its sponsorship for this year’s edition, but the figure will be revealed at the launch in Mponela.
